Douro Valley and Porto

From our hotel in Douro Valley, we made a day trip to Porto, to try the port in its numerous cellars and see the landmarks. In hindsight, it might have been better to spend a night in Porto, to cut down on the commute time and give Alik more freedom in sampling... however, Douro Valley is so beautiful that I highly recommend spending at least one night there.

Our commute was hour-and-a-half each way. Here is one of the beautiful views over the Douro river valley.

Porto - this is a view across the Douro river towards the city center.

A better view of Ponte de Dom Luis I - also built by a student of Eiffel.

We will cross this bridge later. But first, we took the aerial gondola to Vila Nova de Gaia, where they make the port. This is where all the port lodges and cellars are.

Tour of the Sandeman port cellars.

Some of the vintages in the Sandeman port cellars.

Main square in Porto, Praça da Liberdade, and the monument to Dom Pedro IV.

Entrance to the São Bento train station in Porto, decorated with azulejos.
