After the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, we drove up North to Douro Valley, with a couple of interesting stops along the way. First one: caves at Mira de Aire - 350m long and 45m deep, about 30 minutes drive from either Batalha or Alcobaça.
Underground waterfall in the Mira de Aire cave.
Fountains at the bottom of the Mira de Aire cave.
Roman baths
Mosaics in Conimbriga
We also stopped briefly in Coimbra, a University town and a rival of both Lisbon and Porto, but we didn't really have time to explore it in depth. And personally, I think it doesn't come close to either Lisbon or Porto in terms of tourist attraction, so we continued on our way and arrived at out hotel in Douro Valley by end of day.
This is a view of Douro river from our balcony.
