Down South

Next, we drove from Douro Valley all the way down South to Lagos, stopping for one night on the Western coast, in Nazare.

First stop - Lamego, the 686-step stairway to Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. We didn't climb up, just had coffee (and shared walnut pastry) on the plaza at the bottom, with a view of the stairs.

And this is the seaside town of Nazare, vacation pure and simple.

We took the funicular up to the top of the cliffs...

... then came back to sea level - where I planned to "just get my feet wet", with predictable results.

Sundial in front of our hotel in Nazare - one of these balconies is ours...

... and here I am having coffee on that balcony.

Another day, another balcony, another hotel - this one in Monchique, near the Southern coast. Our hotel is called Villa Termal das Caldas, it is a thermal spa. We stayed here two nights, and spent the day in between by doing a grotto tour in Lagos and taking advantage of the thermal spa in our hotel.

Stork nests near Monchique.

Lagos - grotto tour.
